The Governing Board's aim is to work closely with the Headteacher, the Assistant Headteacher, and the staff, in order to help the children at the school achieve their full potential, in a happy, caring environment.

The key elements in achieving this aim are listed below:

  • Monitoring the performance and progress of all the children at the school.
  • Supporting the staff to teach and care for the children.
  • In discussion with the Headteacher, ensuring that the resources of the school are best utilised.
  • Forward planning with the Headteacher and Assistant Headteacher to ensure that the overall performance of staff, children, and hence the school, continues to improve.

To enable the Governors to achieve these objectives, the Board is made up of key groups within the school, parents, staff, the Local Authority, the Church and the community. Some of the Governors are appointed by the Diocese, whilst others are elected.

The Board generally meets once a term; a number of sub-committees focus on finance, staffing, buildings, health and safety and the curriculum. Individual members of the Governing Body focus on particular subjects, ie. Maths, English, ICT, etc.

If you would like to contact the Governing Board please write to Mrs R Nicolaou, Clerk to the Governors, Saint Norbert’s School, Tollgate, Spalding PE11 1NJ

Governors Code of Conduct                                                            Updated June 2016

 Janet Bowser

Janet Havemann Bowser – Chair of Governors
Being a parent and working with children, as an Art Psychotherapist, has fuelled my interest in education.  I have recently become a foundation governor and have enjoyed furthering my knowledge of the educational system and child development.  I believe that all the decisions made by the governing body should strive to allow every child the opportunity to fulfil their potential.  As a parent, I feel privileged to be involved in the strategic direction of the school and actively participate in the strong Catholic ethos of St Norbert’s.

 Simon Pick

Simon Pick – Vice Chair General Foundation Governor
I am a parishioner of St Norbert’s church and have carried out the role of Foundation Governor at the school since October 2012. My daughter was a pupil at St Norbert’s school from September 2005 to July 2012.  I serve on the finance sub-committee and have a particular responsibility for pupil premium and sport funding ensuring we spend monies allocated wisely to benefit all pupils. In my professional life I am a Watch Manager in Norfolk Fire and Rescue service and have completed twenty years’ service. Being a member of a team is an essential part of my work life and it has been a privilege to be part of the St Norbert’s governing body for the past 3 years. The hard work and dedication of the governors and staff ensures that all the children receive the best start possible and are prepared for their future, irrespective of social or ethnic background.

 Fr Jim

Father James Burke – Parish Priest and General Foundation Governor
Born in Peterborough, raised up in Deeping St. James, I was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Nottingham in Deeping St. James in 1994 – it was the first ordination to the priesthood in the village since the Reformation! As a priest I have served in St. Barnabas Cathedral, Nottingham (1994-95), St. Mary’s, Derby (1995-99). I was appointed Parish Priest of St. Mary’s, New Mills (1999-2002), St. Patrick’s, Mansfield (2002-08) and here in Spalding since 2008. I have been a Foundation Governor of five schools within the Diocese. I see my position on the governing body first and foremost to provide pastoral support throughout the school community and work with the Senior Management Team to promote the Catholic ethos throughout the school. As well as celebrating various school and class Masses and prayer services, I make monthly pastoral visits on the first Friday of the month to be available for individual meetings with pupils, parents and members of staff; anyone who would like to speak with me in complete confidence, may make an appointment through the school. I am extremely honoured and proud to be part of this wonderful school and the outstanding achievements of the pupils, staff and my colleagues on the board of governors.

 Christine McManamon

Christine Mcmanamon – Parent Foundation Governor
I became a Foundation Governor five years ago and in that time I have seen our School go from strength to strength recently culminating in an outstanding grade from Ofsted. I enjoy being actively involved in the school and appreciate the hard work and dedication the staff contribute to the school's on-going development.  I am also involved with the Friends of St Norbert's and enjoy getting the children and parents involved in the fundraising process. During Governor monitoring visits I have been impressed with the fantastic atmosphere and the impeccable behaviour of the children. I hope to continue as a Governor and contribute further to the School.

Malgorzata Derewonko – Parent Foundation Governor
Three of my four children currently attend St Norbert’s School.  I was appointed as a foundation governor four years ago as a committed Catholic parent. Being a Polish national I have a keen interest in understanding the British educational system and supporting other parents and children for whom English is an additional language.  I am part of the Curriculum sub-committee and the link governor for EAL (English as an Additional Language) children.
Based on the school’s achievements, friendly environment and the dedication of the staff, I would recommend Saint Norbert’s Catholic Primary School to anyone.

Phil Callow – Elected Parent Governor
Parent Governor since 2007, having the goal of being actively involved with the life of the school throughout my children’s journey through St Norbert’s. Having been involved with IT throughout my career and run my own IT company since 2005, I have many operational skills that I hope have been brought to the role of Governor. Having served as a governor for many years already, I have been very involved with the school building project, ICT, Safeguarding and, of course, the confirmation of the governors belief of St Norbert’s as an Outstanding school by Ofsted. I hope to complete 11 years as a governor, by which time I will have helped the school to a superb footing for the future.

Helen Maltby – Elected Parent Governor
I am a Parent Governor, SEND Link Governor and part of the Finance sub committee, my son Francis is a pupil in Class 5. My interest in becoming a Parent Governor evolved from being part of the Friends committee, I enjoy helping out at the funding raising events. I decided to apply to be a Parent Governor as I felt that it is important to be involved in, understand and contribute to, the school where my child is being educated. I believe that input from the Parent Governor is vital. It enables other Governors to have an understanding of the experience and point of view of a pupils' parent. As part of the Governing body we strive to support the teachers to ensure that every child in the school is helped to develop their skills and creativity, nurture their confidence and provide a solid platform that will in turn prepare them for secondary school and beyond.
